Case Study

Calvary Christian College

How Calvary Christian College implemented a proactive digital wellbeing strategy to foster authentic discipleship and student safety.

At Calvary Christian College, student wellbeing is not treated as a separate issue from the digital world they live in. The leadership team understands that the learning experience, peer dynamics, and personal growth of every student are now deeply shaped by their online lives.

In response, the school has embraced a whole-school approach to digital safety and wellbeing, one where teachers, wellbeing staff, leadership, IT, and families are all equipped to play their part. This case study explores what that looks like in practice: how a non-IT lens on Linewize Connect is helping stakeholders across the school identify risks early, create stronger culture, and support student growth.

We speak to two key leaders who champion this work: Dino Arraiol and Nicole O'Donnell.

The challenge:

In a world of constant connectivity, Dino-Luis Arraiol, Head of Middle and Senior School, noticed a shift in student engagement. The "Fear of Missing Out" (FOMO) and the 24/7 nature of social media were creating a level of digital fatigue that followed students into the classroom.

"Students feel the need to be connected 24/7... leading to a disengagement with real life because it does not match the 'extreme hype' of social media.

Dino-Luis Arraiol, Head of Middle and Senior School

Despite a one-to-one laptop policy designed for learning, students were spending upwards of four hours on screens outside of school hours. The school faced several critical challenges:

  • Digital Fatigue: Students arriving at school disengaged due to excessive overnight screen time.
  • Anonymous Behavior: A rise in anonymous online actions without an understanding of real-world consequences.
  • Ineffective Tools: A previous provider that only offered basic reporting and filtering, failing to give teachers the control they needed to manage a modern classroom.

The Linewize journey

The transition to Linewize was driven by a need for more than just a technical upgrade; the school required a strategic partner to help shift from a reactive 'filter-only' model to a proactive wellbeing culture. By placing control directly into the hands of those who know the students best—Heads of Wellbeing and classroom teachers—the school has fundamentally transformed the classroom dynamic.

This intentional rollout of Linewize Connect, allowed Calvary Christian College to integrate digital safety into their broader 'whole child' strategy, ensuring that social, digital, relational, and physical health are treated as interconnected pillars of a student's growth.

Empowering teachers with classroom management

With the implementation of Classwize, teachers like Nicky O’Donnell, Head of Stage 4, have gained the ability to manage the digital environment in real-time, shifting from being "screen police" to being mentors.

Instead of blanket bans, they now have the flexibility to implement bespoke rules for specific students or managing the digital environment, without hindering the rest of the class. Teachers now have the granular control necessary to keep every student on track.

A proactive approach to mental health

One of the most significant impacts has been the ability to detect "red flags" before they escalate. By fine-tuning the reporting system over six months, the school has created a high-trust environment where genuine concerns—such as gaming addiction, self-harm, or plagiarism—are caught early.

Nicky uses the Digital Distraction Report as an educational tool rather than a disciplinary one. By showing students their own distraction levels, the school fosters a culture of self-regulation and transparency.

This clarity has also transformed parental engagement, as the school can now pinpoint specific incidents, such as attempted system bypasses, and discuss them with families with absolute behavioral certainty.

"The use of the product has positively impacted staff wellbeing by giving them control in the classroom."

Nicky O'Donnell, Head of Stage 4

Bridging the gap between school and home

Calvary Christian College believes in a "three-pronged" approach to wellbeing: the college, the home, and the child. By partnering with Linewize to offer the Qustodio app and Online Safety Hub to parents, it allows them to mirror the school's digital boundaries at home.

Looking ahead

The partnership has resulted in a shift in school culture. By utilizing anonymous reporting systems and "microscripts," students have become empowered "upstanders" who feel safe disclosing concerns. The school has seen a decrease in online behavioral issues outside of school hours thanks to 24/7 filtering and a clear alignment between school expectations and real-world consequences.

"Give it a go. Teachers feel more empowered... and the red alerts help us catch things that would have previously gone unnoticed."

Nicky O'Donnell
