How-To: Protect students from harmful content

A disturbing Tik Tok video that went viral had some schools asking, "How can we ensure our students are protected from harmful content being circulated around school?"

Viral content, such as videos, are a big part of everyday student life and in most cases it is just a bit of fun. But when the content being spread around school is harmful, there are student wellbeing implications.

Linewize allows you to easily identify and block harmful viral content at your school. Check out the video below to learn how you can get better visibility of what your students are doing online, and how to help keep them safe.

Why should I use these features?

Cyber safety is not really about technology; it's about student wellbeing. And with the world becoming ever more digital, this presents a multitude of new challenges for admins, wellbeing & pastoral care staff. The Linewize platform allows for student internet visibility and delivery of timely reports and insights into the hands of the right staff. This helps ensure at-risk students do not go unnoticed and the opportunities to provide suitable student care are identified.

Some statistics to consider

In a Netsafe study of over two thousand New Zealand students, researchers found that among 13 to 17-year-olds, one in five had accessed self-harm material. In Australia, the number of young people seeking help for suicide and self-harm doubled between 2000 and 2015, according to a report from the Australian Health Ministry.

Accessing self-harm content online, evidence suggests, signals a student is at psychological risk. How much at risk, and whether that risk involves troubling thoughts or troubling actions, is a tougher question. However, the ability to identify those students who show a pattern of searching, viewing or posting to self-harm sites is a key way for schools to identify moments of care and help to address this wellbeing issue.
